Nowadays broadcasters require transmitters with high availability which are cost-efficient, remotely controlled for unmanned operation, take up a minimum of space and provide low maintenance cost. Passive transmitter standby systems and single transmitters do not meet these demands.
Taking all these requirements into account, TRANSRADIO SenderSysteme Berlin AG, the former TELEFUNKEN SenderSysteme Berlin AG, introduced a new VHF/FM active transmitter reserve system to the market in 2005. It successfully passed the acceptance test of T-Systems in Germany in October 2005.
The active transmitter reserve system combines high redundancy with cost-efficiency as the complete system comprises only two 19 inch racks. The active transmitter reserve system is available in 10 and 20 KW versions.

The new system consists of two independent transmitters with separate power supplies and exciters. Consequently, for maximum redundancy, both exciters are employed in a passive standby configuration.

The transmitters can be switched either individually or as a combined system to the antenna or dummy load. Motor driven RF coaxial switches enable fully automatic transmitter operation. Optional manual switches with shorting plugs are available.

Low maintenance cost of the Active Transmitter Reserve System

High availability is just one advantage of the active transmitter reserve system. Due to the design concept of two independent transmitters, one of the transmitters can be completely switched off for maintenance while the second remains on air. By omitting the off-air time for maintenance, the active transmitter reserve system offers much lower maintenance costs compared to a single transmitter.

Central Control Unit (CCU)

A central control unit CCU7456 provides all functions to monitor and control the operation of the reserve system. A block schematic of the RF path, forward power, reflected power and the power through the load balancing resistor is displayed on the screen of the central control unit.
 
Remote control for unmanned operation

The active transmitter reserve system is optionally accessible via HTML and SNMP. The network access can be via a dial-in (PSTN, ISDN) or Ethernet connection (TCP/IP). The remote services are integrated in the TCP/IP interface-card. The web server and the SNMP functions, based on SNMP MIBs (management information base) offer all necessary functions to remotely control the system, to display status messages or to integrate the system in a management system.
